A very attractive portrait of Constantine II
Lot 4564
Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.53 g, 5 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 327. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C Laureate and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to right. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS / S - F / NRLT Campgate with no doors and four turrets. Cf. RIC 311 (for possible prototype). A beautiful coin with a very attractive portrait. Minor doubling on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The style of the bust resembles that of Treveri, not Arelate, and in the official 'S - F/ PARL' emission there is no bust type B5 for Constantius II, while the gate has only two turrets.
